Why You Should NOT Go Vegan

I first went vegan back in 2012, initially because I wanted to adopt a healthier diet but also because I didn’t want to cause harm to animals or the environment. But over the last 8 years or so, I’ve noticed a lot of people have become vegan and eventually fell of the wagon and weren’t able to sustain it – both online and in real life.

First, let’s define what veganism is – it’s a lifestyle that abstains the exploitation of animals. While a plant based diet is a huge aspect of veganism, the mindful choices about the type of clothing and cosmetics that you use or abstaining from going to places that captivate animals such as zoos or places like Seaworld. I’m not saying that all of these people to stopped being vegan didn’t know this stuff, some certainly didn’t, but many people think that diet is all there is to it.

If you listen to these people who make their videos about quitting veganism, you find that they talk about the health issues that they experienced while being vegan – making it seem like a vegan diet is supposed to be healthier than a diet with animal products. It seems that a lot of people, just like myself, adopt a vegan lifestyle thinking that they’ll experience health benefits but when you actually look at their diet and lifestyle, you find that in most cases they weren’t ever really eating healthy in the first place.

You see, a vegan diet can simply be a diet composed of potato chips and coke. We all know that’s not healthy but that’s also vegan. Honestly, many of those people who eat a ton of processed foods and experience health problems would have been better off eating mostly a whole food, plant based diet even if it did have a little bit of animal products in it instead of going full carnivore like some people. And by the way, I’m NOT promoting meat, dairy, eggs, or fish but a diet made up of a ton processed foods isn’t gonna be a whole lot better.

Also, a healthy diet isn’t just about eating the right foods because I also agree that many of these people who stop being vegan actually do eat a whole food, plant based diet but eating a healthy diet also means eating the right amount of food. I mean I can’t tell you how many of these people under-ate in calories, which can lead to not getting in enough of other nutrients. And not only did some under-eat but also went on extended, non-supervised water fasts which can be really dangerous if not done properly.

I guess the reason I’m making this video is because I want to see you succeed if you are thinking about going vegan. It’s not because I want to shame anyone for quitting veganism or for wanting to just eat plant based or for wanting to go vegan just for the animals. I think you should always do what makes sense. For me, it’s about taking care of my body with healthy, whole plant based that don’t harm the animals and are more sustainable for the Earth. It sounds like a bunch of hippy stuff, I know. But please don’t just depend on the internet for your nutrition/medical advice because there is so much crazy advice and information out there. Please always seek the recommendations of a registered dietitian because if they know what they are talking about and have read the position paper form the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, they will agree that you can absolutely be 100% fully vegan for the animals and the planet while still being healthy.
