Welcome back to What I Ate Wednesday! Did you ever think I would be sharing keto recipes on this channel? I didn’t either! But I think I have a pretty good reason.

In this “what I ate vegan”, I share one day of eating plant-based keto. It might surprise you if you only know about meat-based keto.

Plus, I’ll address the main questions and concerns you had when I told you about me making this on the community page and on Instagram.

This includes:
Why am I doing keto?
Am I doing plant-based keto? Which of course is answered already!
How to do vegan keto?
What about side effects and isn’t keto unhealthy?
And what about your macros and nutrients on plant-based keto?

As always, my videos are for inspiration, not to tell you how to eat. Nothing I say is health advice. I’m only sharing my personal experience.

Since this video was posted, I have received lots of suggestions saying I should follow several YouTube doctors/dieticians. My answer to that is that I HAVE and it led me to worse outcomes.

Over ten years ago when I was newly vegan for animal welfare, I started following the plant-based doctors so I could stay healthy and vegan for life. I won’t name them here but eventually I started following their SOS-free, WFPB-touting, “nutritarian” advice. When I took my first hiatus because of tendonitis, I followed their diet recommendations even more closely. But not only did my tendonitis symptoms get more severe, I developed the worst depression episode of my life lasting months. This wasn’t sadness due to my situation. It was a complete shut down of emotions. Which would’ve been scary if I still had the ability to feel fear.

After I added fat back in, gradually the depression lifted and I got my emotions back! Not right away but over the course of several months.

I didn’t make the connection between carbs and tendonitis until years later though. Mainly because I was so convinced by those same doctors that healthy whole food complex carbohydrates could not possibly be the reason. Turns out, those were false assumptions.

So while their way might work for some people or even most people; it was terrible for me.

I hope to bring awareness to this in hopes that it spares one person from the years of unnecessary pain that I experienced. This isn’t medical advice and I’m not recommending my vegan keto diet to anyone. Instead, I just hope to encourage you to listen to your own body as you find your way. Only you knows how it feels to be you.

Love,
Mary
